Course overview

The Plants & Earth Study course introduces students to the wonders of nature through the exploration of plants, soil, water, and ecosystems. Designed for elementary to middle school learners, this course promotes curiosity, observation, and understanding of how the Earth supports all living things. Through hands-on activities, visual lessons, and outdoor learning opportunities, students will gain foundational knowledge about the environment and the role plants play in our planet’s health.

Course objectives

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify different types of plants and describe their life cycles
  • Explain how soil, sunlight, water and air helps plant growth
  • Recognize the importance of photosynthesis and pollination
  • Understand human impact on Earth and it’s importance

Course curriculum

Understanding Plants & Their Life Cycle

Objective: Introduce students to plant biology, growth, and the natural processes that sustain plant life.

Parts of a Plant

Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, seeds, and their functions
How each part helps the plant survive and grow

Plant Life Cycle

Topics covered: Seed Germination, Growth, Flowering & Pollination, Seed dispersal
Conditions needed for each stage (sunlight, soil, water, air)

Pollination & Seed Dispersal

Role of bees, wind, water and animals in pollination
Different ways seeds travel and grow into new plants

Earth’s Ecosystems & Environmental Care

Objective: Teach students about soil, water, ecosystems, and human impact on the environment.

Soil & Its Role

Layers of soil: topsoil, subsoil, bedrock
Types of soil: sandy, clay, loamy
Importance of soil for plant growth and food production

The Water Cycle

Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection
How plants depend on and affect the water cycle

Ecosystems & Plant Adaptations

Types of ecosystems: forest, desert, grassland, wetland
Food chains and the role of plants as producers
